The Rat Terrier is an American farm dog, developed in the late 1800s and early 1900s from English terriers and feists, with Whippet and Beagle added later for speed and scenting. Families kept them to clear barns of rats and hunt squirrels. They come in miniature and standard sizes, always with white in a short, smooth pied coat, and the AKC fully recognized the breed in 2010.
In Huntsville, that history shows up in everyday life. Many Rat Terriers are cheerful and eager to stay close to their people, often more biddable than other terriers, but prey drive, digging and alert barking come with the package. Wet seasons turn yards muddy fast, so expect some paw wiping. Dogs vary, so a Rat Terrier's own personality matters as much as the breed description.
