German Shepherd Dogs were developed in Germany around 1900 by Max von Stephanitz, who wanted a capable, intelligent herding dog. The result is a strong, agile dog that is longer than tall, with erect ears, a bushy tail and a dense double coat, most often black and tan, black and red, sable or solid black. Adults commonly weigh 50 to 90 pounds.
Many Shepherds are devoted to their families, quick to learn and naturally watchful, which is why the breed is common in police, search and assistance work. They tend to be reserved with strangers, and some become overprotective without thoughtful socialization. In Huntsville, that working drive suits a household that is home often and enjoys trails, and a calm, confident adult can be an excellent match.
