Cattle Dog is a shelter label more than a single breed. Most dogs carrying it are Australian Cattle Dogs, known as Blue or Red Heelers, or mixes with one, though Texas Heelers and crosses with other herding breeds or Labs show up too. The original drovers were developed in Australia to move cattle by nipping at their heels, which explains the stamina and the stubborn streak.
Expect a medium, muscular dog, usually 30 to 50 pounds, with a short double coat that sheds moderately. Many bond closely with one household and stay reserved with strangers. In Birmingham, that means a dog that does best with a daily outing on hilly trails and a steady routine, and whose size, coat and energy can vary a lot from one mix to the next.
