Askem has quietly become the shelter’s longest-stay resident, largely because his stress in the kennel makes it hard for visitors to see his true nature. At 35 pounds, he’s a handsome, medium-sized Cattle Dog who doesn’t deal well with constant noise and confinement—barrier frustration makes him seem intense or even unapproachable from behind the glass. But this isn’t who Askem is when he feels safe. He once spent two happy years in a loving home after being adopted as a puppy. After his owner faced unexpected life challenges, Askem lost the only family he knew. Since then, the transition back to the shelter has shaken his confidence. He is sensitive and struggles with change, and newcomers or busy situations can make him anxious. But with patience and time to decompress, his real personality shines through—gentle, devoted, and deeply affectionate. Askem leans in for scritches and relaxes when things are quiet. He loves routine and being close to his person. He’s looking for a calm, predictable home—preferably one without young kids, as an adult or older-children household is a better fit. Askem does get along with other dogs. He needs someone who will look past his shelter stress and give him the chance to rebuild his trust and sense of security.
