Calico is a coat pattern rather than a breed: white with patches of black and orange, or gray and cream in the dilute version. The pattern appears in domestic shorthairs and longhairs and in several pedigreed breeds, but most calicos in Plano homes are ordinary domestic shorthairs. Because the orange and black genes sit on the X chromosome, nearly all calicos are female. Most weigh 6 to 12 pounds and live 12 to 18 years indoors.
Coat color doesn't predict personality. "Tortitude" makes a good story, but a calico can be shy, bold, chatty or mellow depending on her upbringing and age. Watching how a cat handles people and other pets tells you far more than her patches do. Shedding is moderate, so a weekly brushing keeps a shorthair's fur manageable, and longhaired mixes need more.
