The Cornish Rex began in 1950 with a curly-coated kitten born on a farm in Cornwall, England. The curls come from a natural recessive mutation, and the coat is only the soft down layer, with no guard hairs, so it lies in tight waves that feel like warm suede. Add a lean, arched body, long legs, an egg-shaped head and very large ears, and it's an easy breed to recognize.
Many Rexes stay playful well into adulthood. They tend to be curious, affectionate and happiest with company, and they often learn to fetch. The fine coat sheds little but gives little protection from cold or sun, and Rexes aren't truly hypoallergenic. In Houston, that makes a climate-controlled indoor home with warm resting spots the right setup, plus occasional baths and regular ear cleaning.
