Despite the name, the Balinese has no link to Indonesia. It's essentially a longhaired Siamese, developed in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s and named for the graceful movement of Balinese dancers. It has the colorpoint pattern, vivid blue eyes and slender build of a Siamese, with a silky coat and a plumed tail. A modern wedge-headed type and a sturdier traditional type both exist.
Many Balinese are bright, social, playful cats that want to be part of everything. They're often a bit quieter than Siamese but still chatty, and they like fetch, puzzle toys and high perches. The single coat has no dense undercoat, so grooming is easy. In Houston, that means a cat that can do well in a high-rise or a bungalow, provided it has company and plenty to climb.
