The American Curl began with a single stray, Shulamith, a black longhaired cat found in Lakewood, California, in 1981. Her kittens inherited the backward-curling ears, and the breed reached championship status in the 1990s. Curls are medium cats of roughly 5 to 10 pounds, with silky longhaired or shorthaired coats in every color and pattern.
Many Curls stay kittenish well into adulthood, following their people from room to room and joining whatever's going on. In Houston, where cats live indoors, that sociable streak matters: a Curl left alone all day with nothing to do may get bored. Because the breed is uncommon, you may also meet cats with curled ears and mixed backgrounds, and each one has its own personality.
