The Abyssinian is a slender, muscular, medium-sized cat, usually 6 to 12 pounds, with a short ticked coat in which each hair carries several bands of color. Large cupped ears and almond eyes give it an alert, wildcat look. The breed was developed in Britain and is among the oldest recognized, though genetic research points to ancestors from the Indian Ocean coast and Southeast Asia rather than Ethiopia.
Abys are busy, inquisitive and athletic, and they like to be involved in whatever you're doing. Many are affectionate without being lap cats. They need daily interactive play, climbing space and company, and they can inherit conditions such as pyruvate kinase deficiency and retinal degeneration. In Houston, that mostly means an indoor life with dependable air conditioning and plenty of vertical territory.
