Ragdolls are large, blue-eyed, semi-longhaired cats developed in Riverside, California, in the 1960s from a white longhaired cat named Josephine. Every Ragdoll is a pointed cat, with darker color on the face, ears, legs and tail, and the breed comes in colorpoint, mitted, bicolor and van patterns in seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red and cream. Their silky coat has little woolly undercoat, so it mats less than many long coats.
The breed is named for a tendency to relax and go floppy when held, and many Ragdolls are gentle, people-oriented cats that follow their owners from room to room. They are usually moderately active, enjoy play without demanding it, and mature slowly, reaching full size around four years. Their trusting nature suits indoor life, and heart screening is an important part of their care.
