The American Shorthair descends from working cats that traveled with early settlers to keep rodents off ships and farms in North America. It became a recognized breed in the early 1900s and took its current name in the 1960s. Expect a solid, muscular cat with a broad face, full cheeks and a dense, hard-textured short coat in many colors, with the silver tabby as the classic look.
Many are easygoing and quietly affectionate, happy to keep you company without demanding attention. They enjoy hunting-style play and tend to gain weight without it. Most shorthaired cats you'll see in the listings are random-bred domestic shorthairs rather than pedigreed American Shorthairs, but they can share the look and the laid-back traits, so it's worth meeting cats of both kinds.
