Dilute calico is a coat pattern, not a breed: a white cat with patches of soft blue-gray and cream, the pastel version of the classic black, orange and white calico. The orange color gene sits on the X chromosome, so these cats are almost always female. Most are domestic shorthairs or longhairs, though the pattern also appears in Persians, Maine Coons and British Shorthairs.
Color says little about personality, so an adopter may meet an affectionate lap cat, a curious explorer or a more reserved, independent one. Shedding is moderate, and a weekly brush keeps most coats in order. With a lifespan of 12 to 18 years, a dilute calico is a long commitment, worth thinking through if you rent and might move.
