The American Bobtail traces back to the late 1960s and Yodie, a short-tailed brown tabby stray found in Arizona. The breed grew from bobtailed cats across North America. Its tail is usually a third to half of normal length, the result of a dominant gene unrelated to the Manx or Japanese Bobtail. It's a medium, muscular cat of roughly 7 to 16 pounds, with a short or medium-long coat in nearly any color.
Bobtails are sociable, clever and playful, and many fetch or walk on a harness. They mature slowly, over two to three years, so a young adult may still act like a kitten. Weekly brushing handles moderate shedding, with a little more for longer coats. That mix of activity and affection suits indoor Charlotte homes with window perches and daily play.
