Calico describes a tricolor coat: white with patches of black and orange, or gray and cream in the dilute version. The pattern appears in many cats, from domestic shorthairs to a few pedigreed breeds, and nearly all calicos are female because of how the color genes sit on the X chromosome. Most calicos in Wichita homes and shelters are ordinary domestic shorthairs, typically 6 to 12 pounds.
Because the pattern says little about temperament, plan around the cat in front of you rather than her colors. Most are moderately active, enjoy a perch by a window, and need routine vaccines, dental care and weight control. Shorthaired calicos shed moderately and need little grooming, while longhaired mixes need more frequent brushing. Many live 12 to 18 years, so adoption is a long commitment.
