Burmese are compact, muscular cats that feel heavier than they look, typically 8 to 13 pounds, with a short, glossy, satin-like coat and large gold eyes. Nearly all American Burmese trace back to Wong Mau, a walnut-brown cat brought to San Francisco in 1930. Sable is the classic color, with champagne, blue and platinum also seen.
Personality is the draw. Burmese are people-focused, curious and playful for life, and many follow their family around like a dog. The short coat is easy to care for, even in Atlanta's humidity, since a weekly rub with a rubber brush covers most of it. Adopters should know the breed can be prone to diabetes and other inherited conditions, and that adult cats vary in personality, so take time to get to know the cat you meet.
