Calico is a coat pattern, not a breed: white with patches of black and orange, or soft gray and cream in the dilute version. The pattern appears in domestic shorthairs and longhairs and in many pedigreed breeds. Because the orange and black color gene sits on the X chromosome, nearly every calico is female. Most calicos waiting for homes are domestic shorthairs, usually 6 to 12 pounds, with moderate shedding and a lifespan of 12 to 18 years.
Personality follows genes, upbringing and age rather than color, and the "tortitude" reputation for sass hasn't been confirmed by research. In Pompano Beach, a calico will most likely be an indoor cat in a warm, humid climate, so an air-conditioned home, regular brushing and safe window perches matter more than any trait of her patches. Spend time with the cat and watch how she responds to people and other pets.
