The Turkish Van is a large, semi-longhaired cat with a white body and color on the head and tail, a pattern called van after the breed. It was developed in Britain from cats two photographers brought back from Turkey in 1955, and it's named for the Lake Van region, where similar cats have lived for centuries. The cashmere-soft single coat has no undercoat and resists water, which helps explain why many Vans will splash in a sink or tub.
Vans mature slowly, often taking three to five years to reach full size, and males can approach 20 pounds. Many are energetic, clever and chatty, and they love to climb and fetch. Most prefer affection on their own terms rather than being held. In Santa Barbara, where many homes are rentals, that means planning vertical space and keeping a Van entertained indoors.
