The Abyssinian is a medium, lithe cat with a short, silky coat in which each hair carries several bands of color, giving it a glowing ticked look. Despite the name, genetic research points to ancestors from the Indian Ocean coast and Southeast Asia rather than Ethiopia. The breed was developed in Britain and is among the oldest recognized.
Abys are busy, curious and athletic, and most want to be involved in whatever their people are doing. They're affectionate without usually being lap cats. In Long Beach, that energy is best met indoors with climbing space and daily play. The short coat needs only occasional brushing, and every cat's personality varies, so the cat in front of you matters more than the breed description.
