Domestic Long Hair isn't a breed. It's the label used for mixed-ancestry cats with a medium to long coat, the fluffy counterpart of the Domestic Short Hair. Because these cats come from the general cat population, they show up in every color and pattern, from tabby and calico to solid black and smoke, and some resemble a Maine Coon or Persian without sharing that ancestry.
With no breed standard, size and personality vary. Adults usually weigh 8 to 15 pounds, and many are affectionate and adaptable once settled, though some are shy at first. What they share is a coat that needs regular brushing to prevent mats and hairballs. In Birmingham, that means a brushing routine that keeps up through the warm months and a cat who's comfortable living indoors.
