About Pooka (AKA Pookie)

Pooka came to us a little over a year ago, surrendered locally because her owner didn't have enough time for her. Her name was Pooch, which wouldn't do, so she was renamed after an Irish shapeshifter in fokelor who usually takes on the form of a winged horse. Seemed fitting as she is my constant companion for barn and horse chores. I held onto Poo because of her exceptional nature, devotion to her person, and easy going nature. She also wasn't spayed, and at nine years old I was worried she would be at risk of a Pyometra (a life threatening bacterial infection that can affect unaltered female dogs at her age). After going back and forth with several veterinarians it was deemed a higher risk surgery at her age, so I was to monitor her. She did end up developing hydrometa that landed us in the emergency room. After this, and ultrasounds, we went to my board certified surgery center to have her spay done. At this time her hydrometra had developed into a very serious mucometra in dogs. Her surgery was done by one of the leading soft tissue specialist in the US who flew up from Texas A&M. Since her surgery in August, she is fully recovered and back to her normal self. I also had the warts on her nose removed. Now that Poo is no longer in danger with her health, I had to consider weather this angel would be happier in a home with her own human, and not constantly having the demands of countless dogs with various personalities coming and going. While she is exceptional with all the dogs, I have come to the difficult decision that she would be happier with less chaos ensuing around her. As a middle-aged gal, I think she would prefer a slower pace in life. I think she would love her own person who doesn't have her attention split with 10-20 dogs every single day. Poo is in exceptional health now and hikes with the pack regularly. She is spry, and highly mobile. She goes for pack hikes/runs 3-4 times per week and will make someone a phenomenal outdoor adventure companion. With the proper care I fully expect her to live well into her late teens. She is my constant barn chore companion hanging out while I take care of the horses. She isn't the least bit prey driven and has been wonderful around all animals -- even my rabbit. She has lived with cats for years, as well. She is hardly EVER on leash, though when we need to go into the city, I can take her into every store and she has exceptional manners on leash and around people. She is a gem, truly. This is a dog who is used to several people of all dispositions and sizes coming and going. She will offer her warning barks, then quickly settle with affirmation from me. She has her favorite little humans who are in our life often, as well. I would love her to go to an adopter who has a love of the outdoors, and a quieter life in the country.
