Terry’s first steps toward friendship have happened on a blanket beside patient volunteers. This 3-year-old, 49-pound boy has been very frightened at the shelter, but during a quiet visit, something changed: after his leash was removed, he repositioned himself, accepted pets, and began seeking more attention. He also accepted some food with encouragement. These small moments offer a glimpse of Terry when he has space and time to feel more comfortable. Terry needs an adopter prepared to move slowly and help him build confidence. Leashes are especially frightening for him, and he has frozen, cried out, or needed to be carried rather than walk. A quiet home, predictable routine, and gradual, reward-based practice with leashing will be important. His experience with dogs, cats, and children is unknown. Someone who respects his pace will have the opportunity to build a relationship through small, everyday moments of trust.
