About Hazel

Hi, I’m Hazel! I’m a 6-year-old chocolate Lab looking for my forever family, and my foster mom says I’m the sweetest foster dog she’s ever had! I’m spayed, vaccinated, and current on preventatives. Because of my epilepsy, my future family should discuss appropriate flea, tick, and heartworm prevention with their veterinarian. First things first, I LOVE my toys! I carry my stuffed babies everywhere, proudly showing them off to anyone who will look. I even toss them into the air and catch them myself! I’m also a professional snuggler and a 70-pound shadow. Whether you’re lounging on the couch, working at your desk, or cooking dinner, I’ll be right there keeping you company. I’m also quite the comedian! I love rolling around on my back, belly in the air, making silly grunting noises. And when it’s time to eat, I get so excited that I jump straight into the air like a billy goat, all four paws off the ground! My house manners are excellent! I’m fully house-trained, have never had an accident in my foster home, and know sit, shake, and down. I listen well, don’t counter surf, and enjoy chewing on appropriate toys. I might beg for a bite of your dinner, though. I am a Lab, after all! I do great with other dogs and cats, and I love children! I currently live with three foster kids and enjoy being involved in everything they do. However, I appreciate a quieter environment and will remove myself when things get overwhelming. A home with children ages 10 and older would be best for me. I’m very loyal to my people and can be protective, so I’ll definitely let you know when someone is at the door! I’m shy and fearful around strangers and need patience, treats, and positive reinforcement to build trust. The best way to win me over is actually to ignore me at first and let me approach you when I’m ready. I’m still learning to be brave on walks. Loud noises like cars and lawnmowers make me nervous, and I can pull hard on the leash. My Gentle Leader helps tremendously, and my foster mom is working on building my confidence. I’m a quiet car passenger, too, although car rides aren’t exactly my favorite. There are a couple of important things my forever family should know about my health and care. I have epilepsy that is currently well managed with Keppra given three times daily. I take my medicine like a champ when it’s tucked into cheese or peanut butter! I also have an emergency nasal seizure medication if needed. My forever family must be able to maintain my medication schedule, including arranging reliable care during vacations or time away. I also have two worn canine teeth and am missing my upper and lower right canines, which were extracted after I broke them chewing on my crate in my previous home. Because of this, my foster mom avoids crating me unless she’ll be gone for an extended period, and she provides a Kong to keep me occupied when needed. So, what am I looking for? A patient, loving family with a relatively quiet home, a dependable schedule for my medication, plenty of appropriate toys, and a comfy place to snuggle. Someone who understands that I might need a little time to trust them but knows that good things are worth waiting for. In return, I promise to be your loyal companion, your personal shadow, your entertainment at dinnertime, and your very best snuggle buddy. If you think you could be my forever family, I’d love the chance to meet you! I am being fostered in Brownsburg, IN. Love, Hazel P.S. A well-stocked toy basket and a comfy couch are highly encouraged! ******* Adopting a Lab can be a wonderful experience. Your new dog will need lots of love, adequate exercise and attention. Keep in mind that dog ownership may include additional costs for training, grooming, and health care beyond annual vaccines and monthly preventatives. It’s a lifetime commitment!
