Torta
AvailableAbout Torta
Personality: Sweet, cuddly, and loving with her people. Very happy overall. Calm and well-behaved at home. Shy with strangers at first, but chicken helps her warm up quickly! Education and Home Skills: Leash Trained: Yes, and improving. Walks are new to her, so expect some zig-zagging and pulling, but she's a quick study, especially with her favorite treats. Potty Trained: Mostly. She occasionally goes inside on pee pads but only if desperate. If she's out at least every 6-8 hours, this rarely happens. Crate Trained: No. She's so well-behaved overall that she likely won't need one. Separation Anxiety: Unknown. She is very attached to her people, so a home where someone is around most of the time is best. Dog Friendly: Yes, with slow intros. She has been calm with small dogs on and off leash and is relaxed and happy around her foster's 13-year-old German Shepherd. Cat Friendly: Likely not, as she has strong prey drive to small critters. Kid Friendly: Unknown, but until further assessment is done, she will need to be in a home without kids. Likes: Soft blankets, cozy dog beds, sleeping in a real bed, napping in her foster's lap, giving kisses, and chicken (the key to her heart). LOVES her walks! Dislikes: People carrying large bags or items, moving quickly toward her, or yelling. She needs time to decompress in a home before showing her full personality. Looking For: A quiet-ish, adult-only home with people who are around most of the time. No cats. Currently, she gets nervous when people come over, so this will need to be managed with slow intros, treats, and patience until she feels more comfortable. It's possible that this behavior will disappear completely once she's no longer with her puppies. Special Needs/Concerns: She is shy with strangers and protective of her puppies, so her true personality around new people is still hard to read. She is still decompressing from pregnancy, hormones, and several big moves, so she needs a calm landing. Bio: Meet Torta: she's wrapping up her current job (being a mom of six) and is ready for her next big role: best friend forever! Her story: Torta was found on the streets of Tijuana and taken in by a family. They later rescued another street dog, and, well, nature took its course. When the family was told they couldn't keep the dogs, The Animal Pad stepped in and took mom, dad, and all six puppies. Torta is about 1.5 years old and her babies are almost 8 weeks old. She has absolutely earned her naps and a place in your heart! The vibe: With her foster mama, Torta is a total softie: constant tail wags, kisses, and lap naps. She has strong positive opinions about soft blankets and cushy dog beds, doesn't chew things that don't belong to her, shows no resource guarding, and lets her foster trim nails without a fuss. With strangers she's a little shy, but a little chicken goes a long way (bribery works, we've tested it extensively). She's already picked up a toy for the first time, and discovered the joy of rolling in grass (it might have been turf, but she didn't know that!). A typical day: Supervising six puppies (full-time, unpaid) Napping on the softest surface available Lap time with her foster Walks, which she loves (great on leash for a gal who never got walks before) Handing out kisses The honest fine print: Her true personality around new people is still a bit of a mystery, but we're expecting great things. When she spent a few hours at a temporary foster home, she was accepting pets and enjoying the couch by hour two. She's still coming down from the hormones, the babies, and being moved out of the only home she knew, and her startle response is already improving after just a few weeks. She may need patience, but it will be rewarded! Torta's dream home: Lots and lots of love, a cozy grown-up household, and a spot in the bed (hers or yours, she's not picky). Add a patient human who lets her meet new friends at her own pace, and she'll be your shadow for life. Final pitch: She's spent the last few months taking care of everyone else. Please apply to take care of her now! Torta's adoption fee includes spay, microchip, one-year rabies and Bordetella vaccines, and 1 of 2 DAPP vaccines.
