Meet Sparrow! Or, as she is lovingly and inexplicably known around here: Spare. Sparrow may be tiny, but don't let her petite little bird body fool you—this girl contains multitudes. Mostly anxiety, audacity, and an absolutely unreasonable appetite. And then there are the eyes. With her giant, round eyes and tiny little face, Sparrow bears a suspicious resemblance to Sméagol from The Lord of the Rings. We're not saying she's ever whispered “my precious” over a can of wet food...but given what you're about to learn, we're also not ruling it out. When it comes to humans, Sparrow is our shy little wallflower. She isn't quite ready to seek you out and demand attention yet, preferring to observe the household from the safety of her favorite accommodations: under the bed, specifically inside the shoe drawer. Apparently we're running a tiny Airbnb and Spare has claimed the footwear suite. But while she won't come asking for cuddles, she actually doesn't mind being scooped up and loved on. Once you catch your Spare, she's perfectly content to hang out for some snuggles. With a patient family willing to let her come out of her shell on her own time, we think there's a very sweet little girl waiting to fully emerge. Her shyness, however, is strictly a human problem. Other cats? Sparrow LOVES them. She's comfortable, confident, and happy around her feline friends and would absolutely benefit from having a kitty companion in her forever home. Dogs accidentally spook her? Suddenly our timid little bird becomes 10 feet tall and FULL OF HISS. She will puff herself up, stand her ground, and make it very clear that she may weigh approximately three grapes, but she is prepared to throw hands if necessary. And then there's food. Sparrow is a certified food monger. Every meal is consumed as though she has just returned from a six-month expedition across the wilderness and hasn't seen food since. There are grumbles. There is urgency. There is absolutely no trust that another meal will ever be served despite all historical evidence suggesting otherwise. Wet food requires an additional security protocol. If other cats are nearby, Sparrow will grab a mouthful, physically remove it from the communal eating area, and enjoy it at a secure secondary location just in case one of these criminals gets any ideas. Honestly, this is where the Sméagol resemblance becomes less physical and more of a lifestyle. Nobody touches Spare's precious. Sparrow is a tiny, quirky girl who just needs someone willing to give her the time and security to realize humans aren't so scary. Give her another kitty to love, a shoe drawer to sleep in, plenty of wet food to guard like the One Ring, and a little patience—and we think Spare might just be the one thing your family didn't know it needed.
