Hawkeye is a beautiful black and white male kitten, approximately nine months old, who survived circumstances no animal should ever have to endure. He was one of 38 cats rescued by Edgar and Ivy's Cat Sanctuary from a horrific hoarding situation. These cats had been living in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions, struggling with illness, fear, and neglect. Hawkeye was among the sickest. He was suffering from severe mange and feline herpesvirus, and his condition was so critical that we nearly lost him. Thankfully, we rescued him from that house of horrors just in time. With extensive medical treatment, nursing care, and patience, Hawkeye survived and slowly regained his health. While his physical illnesses have improved, we can only imagine the emotional trauma he experienced during those frightening months. He has never known the security of a loving family or the comfort of a home where his needs always come first. Hawkeye will remain a lifelong carrier of feline herpesvirus (FHV-1), a common feline upper respiratory virus that can cause sneezing, nasal congestion, and watery or irritated eyes. The virus affects only cats and cannot be transmitted to humans or dogs. Once infected, cats typically carry the virus for life, although it may remain dormant for long periods. Stress can sometimes trigger flare-ups. Vaccination helps protect other cats by reducing the likelihood and severity of illness, but it does not completely prevent infection or transmission. Many cats with feline herpesvirus live happy, comfortable lives with appropriate care. Hawkeye has been neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped and has finally reached the day we once feared he would never see. He is ready for adoption. We are searching for a patient, compassionate family who will give him time to feel secure and discover that human hands can offer gentleness instead of fear. A quiet, loving indoor home could give Hawkeye something he has never truly experienced: a place where he belongs and never has to struggle to survive again. Hawkeye has already endured more suffering than any kitten should. He survived the neglect, the illness, and the fight for his life. Now he deserves the opportunity to learn what kindness, safety, and unconditional love feel like. Edgar and Ivy's Cat Sanctuary will provide educational information about feline herpesvirus to help his future family understand his condition and care for him with confidence.
