AvailableAbout Elmo
Elmo is a majestic long-haired ginger male cat born May 14, 2026. With his magnificent fluffy coat, handsome face, and enormous paws, this beautiful boy looks like a little lion. But behind that gorgeous face is the story of a kitten who had to fight very hard just to survive. Elmo was taken into an animal control facility when he was just a baby, suffering from a severe feline herpesvirus infection. He was very sick and needed medical care that went far beyond what most animal control facilities are equipped to provide. That's how Elmo found his way to Edgar and Ivy. Here at our shelter, Elmo received the medical treatment, supportive care, and attention he needed to recover. It wasn't an easy road, but this determined little boy worked hard to regain his health. Today, Elmo is doing wonderfully, his feline herpesvirus is in remission, and he has grown into the magnificent, fluffy ginger boy you see today. We want potential adopters to understand a little about feline herpesvirus (FHV-1), because having this virus does not mean Elmo cannot live a long, happy, normal life. Feline herpesvirus is a common respiratory virus in cats. Once infected, a cat generally remains a lifelong carrier, but many cats go for months or even years without experiencing symptoms. The virus is specific to cats and cannot infect people or dogs. It can be transmitted to other cats, even those who have been vaccinated, although vaccination significantly reduces the risk of severe illness. Cats with feline herpesvirus may be more sensitive to stress, changes in their environment, and irritants such as strong fragrances, smoke, and dusty litter. These factors can sometimes trigger flare-ups involving sneezing, watery eyes, or nasal congestion. A stable, loving home and prompt veterinary attention when symptoms appear can help keep these cats healthy and comfortable. We will include a detailed informational flyer in Elmo's adoption envelope explaining feline herpesvirus, how it is managed, and what his new family should know. Elmo is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and ready for adoption. He has already overcome so much in his young life, and now all we want for him is a family who will see beyond a medical history and recognize the wonderful cat standing right in front of them. Elmo fought hard for his chance at life. Now he deserves a beautiful life filled with love, comfort, and a family of his very own.
