Wow!!! Kane is magnificent! This 2-year-old Great Dane mix has striking color contrast, the build of an athlete, and legs that suggest a racehorse lurking somewhere in the family tree. But his finest qualities have nothing to do with his looks. Clearly, Kane was loved. He has the easy confidence of a dog who has never felt a hard hand or heard an ugly voice. He lived with young children and other dogs, including a feisty Shiba Inu he considered his best friend. His person received military orders to go overseas, and when no one could take Kane, he made the heartbreaking decision to surrender him. Everyone was in tears that day. Kane watched his person leave, then soldiered on. He walked over to say hello and leaned against us for affection, as though he understood that we could all use a little comforting. Kane's a leaner. Petting him is a lovely experience, provided you're prepared to serve as a load-bearing wall. I was nervous about walking him into his new section at the shelter. If he pulled, I would have been airborne. If he planted his feet, we weren't moving. And with dogs barking from every direction -- some welcoming him, others questioning his credentials -- I had no idea how he'd react. But Kane simply stayed beside me, matching my steps through what must have been a frightening experience. Not one tug. Not one hesitation. His manners extend to mealtime. Kane could easily jump up and send his food bowl flying, raining kibble and chicken down upon us. None of us is taller than this guy standing on his hind legs! Instead, he walks calmly and sits like a gentleman until his meal is placed in his raised feeder. I'm trying not to rhapsodize about this dog, but Kane makes restraint nearly impossible. He's gorgeous, gentle, affectionate, wonderfully well-mannered, and somehow remarkably thoughtful. For a dog of such extraordinary size, he seems unusually careful about the space he occupies and the people who share it. Kane knows the rhythms of family life -- children, other dogs, the familiar bustle of a home filled with people he loves. He deserves to have all that again. Please come let him lean on you -- and he'll return the favor. Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are 9am to noon, daily, including weekends & holidays.
