About Toby
Meet Toby! This handsome boy has waited far too long for a forever home, and we would love to see him find his family before the holidays. Toby is around 2 years old and weighs between 45 and 50 lbs, close to his full-grown size. While his exact breed is uncertain without a DNA test, we believe he might be a mix of Retriever, Shepherd, and Border Collie. His glossy, wavy black coat, accented with white and cream patches, combined with his sunny personality, truly makes him one of a kind. Toby was found wandering the streets of Texas alongside a smaller dog companion. Since September, he has been patiently waiting in a shelter for someone to give him a chance. Described as a happy, people-loving boy, he radiates cheerful energy and shows his excitement in the most amusing ways. A little eye contact and a treat prompt him to do the cutest “air snap,” which is like a tiny concert of castanets every time he gets enthusiastic. He is dog-friendly and playful, thriving on the chance to meet new canine buddies. While he would enjoy having another dog in the home, he could definitely adapt as the only dog, provided his family dedicates time to give him attention, exercise, and enrichment. Toby walks well on a leash and appears to be house-trained based on shelter observations, which gives his future family a great starting point. However, it’s important to establish a consistent routine in his new home, as occasional accidents can happen while he adjusts. He’s passed the tiny puppy stage but remains full of youthful enthusiasm, making him a great companion for walks, hikes, or adventures. While we don’t know if he has lived with children before, his friendly demeanor suggests he could be a good match. It’s important for introductions to be gradual and for interactions to be supervised, especially considering his size and energy. As for cats, Toby has been seen barking at them from a distance, so compatibility would need further assessment before placement in a home with felines. Ideally, Toby would love a home with access to a securely fenced yard for safe play and exploration, but apartment living could work as long as his exercise needs are met. Most importantly, Toby needs someone prepared to nurture him with time, structure, patience, and affection. His cheerful personality and love for people make him a wonderful addition to any family. Toby's shelter is overcrowded, and dogs like him face uncertain futures without quick adoption. He’s ready to trade his kennel for a loving home, just in time for the holidays. Toby is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and heartworm negative. If you think Toby could be the right fit for you, please consider giving him a chance. Transportation to his new home in Texas is included in the adoption fee, but keep in mind that potential adopters will not be able to meet Toby in person prior to finalizing the adoption.
