At Hobbes Haven our mission is to help shape and support a better life for feral & stray cat colonies in our varying communities of the Columbia River Gorge. We want to introduce you to mama Greta (don't forget her babies Bojack, Ms. Peanut Butter, Dill & Fennel)! Greta was a young mom who gave birth around 6 months of age, based on a guess of how old she is now that she was recently spayed and received her first medical check up in early August. Greta is now around 10 months old and has bloomed to become a very gentle and love seeking girl. She is cautious and peeks around to corner to make sure everything looks ok before coming out to join the kitten party. When she sees me, she starts dancing on her two front paws, making dough in anticipation of a good chin rub. Greta is a loving and giving girl, who helped me nurse 3 different litters of kittens who were rescued by Hobbes Haven. This girl came to us as a stray mama, with plans to be returned to her feral colony after her first litter, but since we got a 2nd litter just weeks after her first, she began nursing them with ease and soon her time with us was naturally extended. A 3rd litter joined weeks later, and her time was indefinitely opened ended, as we noticed she would begin responding positively to cans of wet food coming towards her along with a human hand, until she would walk towards the human holding the hand, and now where she melts in my hand as I hold her little head. I've noticed Greta was rescued as a stray mom with 4 of her babies who were born in one of our winter shelters located at one of our support sites out in Tygh Valley Oregon. Greta found refuge in the new shelters and familiarized herself with the safe space before deciding to give birth in the shelter. She was gently scooped away from the feral colony and brought to Hobbes Haven to safely nurse her first litter of kittens back in mid-April 2026. We would be so thankful if Greta could join a life with a pair of her babies, but we realize that is a far shot and so welcome the opportunity of a home on her own with a family that is home often or takes her on the family trips. We hope to find families that will keep in touch with Hobbes Haven and update us with pictures and videos of our rescued friends! Remember that many times we have been fostering these kittens for many months, and that is another reason you know Hobbes Haven is a good-hearted organization to support, because our goal is to find the RIGHT homes, NOT a home RIGHT NOW. Here at Hobbes Haven we focus on supporting the health and well-being of feral and stray cat colonies via T-N-R-M (Trap- Neuter- Return- Monitor); if we encounter kittens or cats young enough or friendly enough to domesticate, we rescue them from those sites and work with them directly to get them healthy and ready for a second chance at life as a part of a family and a home. Our rescued cats and kittens are unique being that they were born as feral or stray cats, meaning it took more time and involvement to domesticate them may than others. When you support Hobbes Haven via your adoption and donations, you are helping a bigger ripple effect, because you are supporting existing feral cat colonies stop their cycle of suffering by getting all colony cats sterilized and vaccinated, but also offering a very rare second chance to a few lucky ones. At Hobbes Haven, your adoption fee helps us cover this kitten's start-of-life veterinary care at one of our collaborating veterinary clinics in the Columbia River Gorge- this is a transparent one-to-one transaction, absolutely no revenue is made from this. Currently we have an estimated guess that Greta was born end of 2025, making her around 10 months old now. Her adoption fee helps reimburse us for her spay and initial essential vaccines (rabies, FVRCP). Greta has been dewormed several times and is receiving direct care and interaction to continue to domesticate her. Up to the point of adoption, Hobbes Haven has covered the following out of pocket: Spay, rabies & FVRCP vaccine/s, deworming, nail trimmings, veterinary care, food, cat supplies, daily care, etc. your donations help us recover these costs and truly make a difference!
