I’m Nelson, a 112-year-old, 712-pound neutered little gentleman with gorgeous green eyes, a handsome fox-like face, and a whole lot of personality packed into one tiny body! My foster mom says I’m her Velcro dog, and she’s not exaggerating. My favorite place in the entire world is wherever my person happens to be. Ideally, I’d like to be right next to you—or better yet, touching you—but I’ll compromise and settle for being in the same room. When my foster Mom is busy at the kitchen sink, you can usually find me sitting right between her feet, supervising everything. I’m a happy, playful guy who loves chasing and wrestling with my foster dog siblings. Squirrels are also VERY exciting and, in my opinion, definitely require chasing! I haven’t lived with cats or children in my foster home, so we don’t know how I’d feel about them. I’m still learning how to be a pampered family dog. Before coming into rescue, I was kept in the backyard of a local backyard breeder and used as a breeder dog. Because I didn’t get the chance to experience much of life as a beloved family pet, I’m still learning things like manners, playing with toys, and all the wonderful things that come with living in a home. I may have a lot to learn, but I’m a sweet little blank slate who’s ready to discover just how good the spoiled-dog life can be! One thing I have figured out? Treats! I’m a big fan of Himalayan yak cheese chews, bones, and especially those yummy peanut-butter-filled hooves. I’m also a pretty decent eater, although sometimes life is just too interesting and I get distracted before finishing my dinner. And wait until you see my happy dance! When I get excited, I pop up on my back feet, bounce up and down, and wave my little paws in the air. My foster Mom thinks it’s ridiculously cute. (She is correct.) Now, a few things my future family should know about me: I’m not a fan of crates, carriers, or baths, and yes—I do have a voice and I’m not afraid to use it! I can also become stiff and uncomfortable when I’m picked up, so I’d much rather come to you on my own terms. I don’t jump onto furniture, either. My potty habits have been very good in my foster home, although my foster Mom still has me wear a belly band while I continue learning the ropes. The biggest thing I’m working on is separation anxiety. Being away from my person is hard for me, and I may whine or scratch at a door or gate if we’re separated. I’ll need a patient, understanding adopter who can help me gradually learn that being alone is safe and that my people always come back. I can also become protective of my favorite person. My foster Dad is perfectly fine, but my foster Mom? She is THE ONE. Because I bond so deeply, I’ll need someone willing to help me learn that I don’t have to guard the people I love. At the end of the day, I’m a sweet, affectionate little guy who wants more than anything to belong. I’m happiest with my family, I’m the perfect snuggle size, and bedtime is especially wonderful if I can sleep in bed with you. If that’s not your style, I’m happy sleeping in my own cozy dog bed—as long as it’s in our room, of course. I may still have some things to learn, but I have so much love to give. One more important thing to know about me: when I came into rescue, I tested slightly positive for heartworms. The good news is I’m currently undergoing treatment and being well cared for while I get healthy and ready for my next chapter. I’m expected to be ready for my forever home in mid-October, but you don’t have to wait until then to fall in love with me!
