Athena came from a hoarding situation where she had never experienced the inside of a home and didn’t even have a name. Trusting humans has been a challenge for her, but her foster mom has taken things slowly, allowing Athena to move at her own pace. Bit by bit, those walls of distrust have started to come down. Within a week, Athena barked at the wind, signaling that she was beginning to feel secure enough to protect what’s hers. Now, she takes food and treats from her foster mom's hand—another sign of progress. She also responds to her name and often comes when called, indicating she's learning to trust. She gets along beautifully with the other dogs in her foster home and has formed a special bond with her foster brother, Princeton. He has shown her that this new world isn't as scary as it seems. Athena could thrive as an only dog or with another calm dog that can provide reassurance during her transition. Named after the Greek goddess of wisdom and strength, Athena embodies the resilience she has shown throughout her journey. As a Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier mix, she is on a long road to confidence, but she’s made significant strides already.
