Meet Chewy! If you're looking for a loyal best friend with a goofy streak, Chewy is your guy! This handsome Red Fox Lab mix has a heart as big as his love for squeaky Chuckit balls. Toss a ball, and you've made his day—he could happily play fetch for hours. Aptly named, Chewy makes adorable noises reminiscent of the Star Wars character Chewbacca. As a passenger in the car, he will "trill" from the back seat, and while chewing on a Benebone, he fills the air with his happy sounds. Chewy came to us from the San Jose Animal Care Center after being turned in as a stray. It's clear he's had a tough start; he presented with calloused skin and was about 20 pounds underweight. Luckily, his life took a turn for the better at AFRP, where he's now learning the joys of comfort, good food, and affectionate belly rubs. He's been neutered, vaccinated, and is currently receiving treatment for his skin condition, which we’re looking closely into with a vet dermatologist. Beyond his love for playtime, Chewy is happiest when he's close to people. He follows you from room to room, keeping you company whether you're cooking, working, or relaxing. His sweet personality makes him an easy companion. In his foster home, Chewy is crate trained and adapting well to routines. While he has a history of marking outdoors due to being neutered later in life, his foster has been using a "belly band" inside the house, which Chewy wears without fuss. He's also a fan of slow feeders and takes his medicine wrapped in cheese graciously. Chewy walks well on a leash and enjoys neighborhood explorations with his foster’s resident dogs. He’s curious about other dogs but isn’t reactive. He could likely live with a cat after proper introductions, as he has shown no interest in being aggressive towards them. While he currently resides with three large male dogs, he seems more inclined to be a roommate than a playmate. With his gentle nature, loving personality, and resilient spirit, Chewy is ready to find a family that will cherish him as much as he’ll cherish them.
