About Paloma

PLEASE read this entire bio, including adoption application instructions. If you do not fill out the application on our website and only do a PetFinder inquiry, we will not be responding to your interest. Please ensure directions are followed. Paloma is an absolutely wonderful 1.5 year old, 74lb cane corso mix. She embodies everything that people love about mastiff breeds - she is incredibly loyal and bonds deeply with her person, she is strong-willed and very smart, and has the cutest body wiggles you have ever seen. Paloma was adopted as a puppy from the shelter by a citizen then returned a little over a year later by that same owner because they didn't have time for her and kept her as an outside dog. She was understandably scared and confused at the shelter, she would pancake in fear. Her scared behavior landed her on the euthanasia list where we then promptly scooped her up. We are suckers for big babies and we love a mastiff. In foster care, she has shown us just how wonderful she is. She is extremely friendly with all people - has shown zero signs of stranger danger. She is terrific with other playful dogs around her size. She has played with many dogs from 40-80lbs and done beautifully with all of them. She does have a more alpha personality so if she is adopted into a home with another dog, they should be more neutral or submissive. She does have a high prey drive so no cats or small dogs for this lady! Paloma loves to train - she is very in tune with her foster and responds to sounds so readily. She redirects easily thanks to her deep bond with her human. Because of her love of training, we believe she has the ability to be a service dog if given the opportunity. Paloma is working on leash training and crate training. On leash, we use a figure 8 and working with low level e-collar to help her with redirection. She responds very well, but her adopter should be dedicated to continuing this work! With crate training, she has improved leaps and bounds with only a few weeks in foster. She will get into the crate then howl for about 10-20 mins, then settle in to sleep. Again, an adopter should be excited and willing to help her work through this. She is just a puppy who was never exposed to inside life! Paloma is a high energy young dog who is looking for an active home where she can get the breed-appropriate exercise she needs. She should be getting at least 1.5 hours of cumulative exercise per day. Paloma is AMAZING but mastiff and large breeds require a specific type of owner to thrive. It is someone who is willing to work with their dog day in and day out to give them the fulfillment they need. Paloma thrives on routine and exercise. When given that, she will give you the world. Paloma is: 1.5 years old 74lbs High energy Amazing with people Great with dogs her size (no cats or small dogs!) Potty trained - although, she will pee with excitement in her crate if she's out of her routine Crate trained - 10-20 mins of vocalization then she settles down Fantastic in the car *PLEASE NOTE: all of our dogs are fostered in Houston, TX, where our rescue is based. However, we work with trusted transport partners to transport our dogs to over 30 cities in the United States. Additionally, adopters are always encouraged to come to Houston to pick up the pup and bring them home. Once an adoption is confirmed, our team will work with you to determine the best transport schedule.
