About Shadow

One click of the special needs button does not begin to explain Shadow's special needs. Shadow is a very, very special (and unique) kitten. Shadow has so many quirks and small challenges, that we really don't know if he was born with some deformities or whether he had a trauma like a car accident. He is about 9 months old and originally came from a Baltimore animal shelter. He was originally taken in by Journeys when he was about 7 weeks old with the belief that he would need his front leg amputated - his paw was severely deformed and he had a small limp. After being taken in by Journeys and seen by an orthopedic vet, it was decided that he should keep his leg, as taking it off could create problems with his other legs fully supporting him - because those legs weren't fully normal either! Movement-wise, Shadow is surprisingly not special needs, despite what was expected! He can run and play very well! And sure, he can't jump to a high counter or jump down from your arms because his legs wouldn't be able to support that, but he has just about fully functioning legs! What makes Shadow special needs is that he has REM Sleeping Disorder which causes him to have what look like small seizures while he sleeps. He will kick and jerk and have small urinary incontinence during each episode. The amount that he leaks is very small each time (about 1/2 teaspoon would be a decent guess), but his new home would want to keep his sleeping areas padded to make clean-up easier. He has been starting to trial medication to help decrease the leakage, but it will take time to figure out what works. He will most likely need twice daily medication for life. He is currently taking Gabapentin and will likely add proin. If those medications do not work, he will move to anti-seizure medications. To add to his quirkiness, Shadow has a bit of an obsession with water. The vet believes he may be blind in one eye so it's possible some of his water play could be an attempt to figure out the depth of the water. But leave a toilet seat open and Shadow is in heaven. He will splish and splash in his water dish until all of the water is gone. We have tried many, many different solutions and haven't found one that does not let him make a mess! The best solution we have found so far is putting whiskey cubes in a small dish so he can see the depth a bit better. That has worked the best, but he still tries to play in it! Perhaps the best option would be to put his water dish in a bathtub! We have also found that he needs an XL litter box because he has a tendency to step in things (likely because of his spacial/visual challenges) if he doesn't have ample space. As for his personality, there could be no better cat! He is a definitely a shadow. Although not the most creative of names, he truly is a shadow and wants to be around you all the time. He doesn't mind being picked up (and often enjoys being cradled like a baby), and loves to cuddle and be around people. He loves other cats and is used to a large, lazy, senior dog. His favorite toys are small "beast labs" (children's toys) - they have a small bounce and he loves carrying them around and hiding them under things.
