Per volunteer 6/15: Today I interacted with Perlata who has a cage card tag stating " In a Mood." After taking out several other small dogs and observing her being nervous and doing a little growling/reacting in her cage, I decided to make one last check on her. Her cage and blankets were covered with feces. I am guessing because she hadn't been taken out due to her behavior. I decided to try to take the blankets out and pick up what was left in the cage, By sitting next to the cage on the floor and offering her small soft treats she began to settle good bit. I opened the cage door to remove the blankets and continued giving her treats. She sniffed my hand several times. I slipped a leash over her head and she crawled out of the cage and into my lap, leaning hard into me. She was clearly frightened by all the barking and noise the other dogs were making. She allowed me to lift her onto the floor and she walked well through the kennel and outside. She even trotted a little as first which was super cute. She peed when we went out and walked a bit, but it was still warm. We took a break and sat down on the cement near the enclosed yards in the back. She again climbed onto my lap and proceeded to lick my hands and reached up to lick my chin. She is a VERY SWEET dog. She just seems to have "small dog, shy and scared by noise and chaos syndrome." If you go slow with her at the cage, feed her small soft treats and talk sweetly to her she comes right around. I think she is just upset and stressed in the loud small dog room. She is obviously overweight, which is tough because treats help to bring her around. She would be great in a calm home with an older adoptive family.
