Daisy was originally found tied to a porch in 2024 along with another dog. The owner was nowhere in sight, and sadly it was noticed that Daisy was lactating but no puppies were nearby. She was very fearful when she first arrived at the shelter but opened up with time. After a few weeks, she was adopted into a home with other dogs, cats, and children and we later learned she would do best in a cat-free home. Her eyes were wide with a hint of sad. Ears to the side, hunched body and tail down as she got up off the bed to come to the door. Leash Skills: lightly dodged the leash. Slowly came out of the kennel, walked on the leash behind me. Eyes darting, head down, ears to the side, hunched body walking through the kennels outside. Sociability: Asocial. Moved away when i attempted to pet. Did not take any treats from me. Cautiously walked around the yard. Wide eyes, ears to the side and tail going from down to tucked. Play: n/a Dog Interaction: met scarlet. Avoidant and tense Return to Kennel: walking through the kennel she pulled away from me. Looking under the kennels. Wide eyes, ears back and tail down. Hesitated needed me to take a step in. Color Level: blue Recommendations and considerations:" Previous behavior notes: Per staff conversation with owner 11/13/24: Dog had cat in mouth. When she went downstairs there was blood everywhere and cat was deceased. They would play together usually. She was humping other dog so they don't know if she has a dominance thing. Never showed aggression at all outside of this instance. No one knows what led to this instance on this day. She said her dog only ever just chased the cats. Per staff 8/10/24: Did a meet with potential adopters and 3 kids (13, 10, 7). Daisy did so well! She was gentle with the kids, although she looked to me at first before approaching the adopters and did need some encouragement from me to approach. She was gentle with them and would lick their faces when they knelt. Per staff 8/9/24: Meet went really well. We did a distant dog meet due to her being sick. Meet went well, there were some tail wags. Per staff 8/9/24: Met with their dogs and it went pretty well - Daisy was tense but clearly out of fear and she loosened up well when she was able to sniff and walk with them. Per volunteer 8/9/24: Shy, but sweet. Needed to be carried back to kennel. Per staff 8/8/24: Shy but sweet outside Per staff 7/28/24: Daisy got out for some one on one time today! In kennel she greeted me so enthusiastically! She stood by the door with soft eyes, a mid level wagging tail, and whined excitedly. She was patient for leashing and came out on her own once secured. She walked all the way out of the kennel on her own, and walked nicely out to the yard with me! She barely pulls, but she does like to walk directly in front of your feet while walking, so watch your step! She did put the brakes on when we saw another dog from afar, but I was able to crouch down and coax her with a baby voice to keep her moving. When we got to the yard Daisy followed me to the bench where I sat down and leaned against my legs right away. She curled into me and accepted some all over pets and love, giving little face kisses as I did. She is so sweet and cuddly!! After some pets she sniffed around and explored the yard a bit. She would stop by me every few minutes for some pets and love, and would go back to exploring. I squeaked a toy and she came trotting up to sniff it, but flinched away when I tossed it for her. Since she was still scared of sudden movement and toys, we just hung out and cuddled for the rest of our time. Daisy leaned against me happily and wagged her tail with soft eyes as I pet her all over. She showed no fear of any handling, and just wanted to be close to me. When it was time to go back Daisy walked nicely until we got to the final stretch before the door back into the kennels. She put the brakes on and would not move, even coaxed. I think she didn't want to go back inside, poor girl! She allowed me to pick her up and carry her with no issue, and just relaxed in my arms. She let me put her in her kennel and remove the leash without any issue, but did give me a betrayed look as she walked away. Poor Daisy is still scared, but is such a cuddle bug and a sweetheart! It's so nice to see her sweet personality shining through! Per staff 7/19/24: Brought Daisy out to see if either would open up more with their friend. They didn't recognize each other and were hesitant at first, but once they got close enough to sniff Donald opened up a lot! His body got looser and he began wagging, and even did a nice shake off! Daisy was still tense and had a tucked tail, but she clung to Donald's side and didn't want to move away from him at all. At one point she gave Donald a bunch of face kisses! They both approached staff member voluntarily together and were more open to handling together. It seems like they both gain confidence when together! Per staff 7/19/24: BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: KENNEL PRESENTATION: Daisy was curled up in her bed when I approached. She looked up with wide, dilated, semi hard eyes. She did not move at all so I lowered the divider and crouched down. I tried using a baby voice and some treats to coax her toward me, but she stayed still and maintained semi hard eye contact. I was able to leash her easily and she didn't move at all. Once leashed it took her a few minutes to actually leave kennel. I pulled her bed to the door and used some leash pressure but she wasn't moving. After a few minutes she began climbing out on her own, but stopped about half way out. I used leash pressure to pop her the rest of the way out. LEASH SKILLS: Completely pancaked, did not walk at all. I had to loop under her belly and pull her to the eval room. HANDLING: When we got to the room Daisy was very scared. Her body was tense and slightly lowered, and she trembled continuously. I offered her some treats but she was too scared. She allowed me to give her some body pets in an attempt to comfort her, but she turned around slowly with hard eye contact, so I gave her some space. Daisy tried to hide in tight, dark space in the room, and would cry in her hiding spot. She would not come out for me when I tried to coax her. I got some string cheese to offer her and she actually took some after some time. At first she ignored me and the cheese, avoiding eye contact, but slowly she began tasting the cheese and taking some. After her first cheese stick was gone she wasn't as interested in cheese. She tolerated all touch and handling but was tense and avoided eye contact with hard eyes throughout. She was trembling and just terrified. She did not want to walk back to kennel again, so I looped her again. At her kennel she didn't want to climb in on her own, but she allowed me to pick her up and lift her. Even terrified, she appears quite tolerant. When I lifted her I got some milk on my arm, so I do think she has had puppies very recently, and this may be adding to her fear and nervousness.
