He is literally perfect and takes his babysitting duties of me very seriously. Lol He is so good with kids. 5/11/26-Diego went to another vet to see about getting doxycycline for the positive anaplasma test. The vet explained to us that the positive test for anaplasma doesn’t mean there is an active infection but that there has been exposure to a tick carrying Anaplasma bacteria. Anaplasma bacteria effects platelets, so if a dog tests positive, they run a complete blood count(CBC test) to ensure that platelets are adequate. If dog is non-symptomatic (like Diego) and a CBC returns normal, they just need put on year round flea/tick/heartworm preventative (if not already) to prevent reinfection and protect from other tick borne disease. Dogs may continue to test positive in the future or may turn back negative over time. Would continue to check a CBC annually with new home’s vet if he continues to test positive, as you can’t differentiate between new and old infections. At this time, there is no evidence of an active Anaplasma infection based on CBC so no antibiotics needed. Diego is cleared for adoption! 5/10/26-Diego has been doing so well! He really is the perfect boy. I hosted Mother’s Day and had lots of people/kids in and out and he did great. Happily but gently greeted everyone. No barks or growls. The fence and doors were left open numerous times and he never went out or even tried too. He knows all the basic commands plus some. He loves playing ball and even gives you the ball back. He likes car rides, lays in the back calmly. He really likes cuddling people but will lay on his own if you tell him too. He’s loves Josie and would love to have a doggy sister or brother but he’ll thrive as an only dog soaking up all the attention. He’s going to be a great addition to any family! 5/4/26-Mr. Diego is still doing great! He got all of his shots, checkup & heartworm/lyme test on Saturday so he is now up to date with everything. He did so good, not even a flinch. He did test positive for Anaplasmosis which is a treatable disease caused by ticks so we will be starting him on antibiotics soon. He is a total love bug. Loves to sleep in bed with me, touching or laying on me as much as I will let him. He is also fine sleeping outside of my room, he just prefers to be with me. He sleeps through the night and lasts my entire work day without needing potty breaks. He doesn’t need to be crated. He has shown no signs of destruction. Diego loves going for walks and playing ball. He enjoys his bones and watching out the window. He has met people of all ages, including kids and done great. He is pretty much the perfect pup! His buddy he was raised with, Sestra, is also now available. 4/28/26-I’ve started leaving Diego out of the crate while I am gone and he has done great. No accidents or destruction! He has started to find his voice a little bit and will half bark at people walking by the house but once you tell him no he stops. He remains very respectful of Josie and her things. He thinks he is a lap dog and will try his hardest to make his way on your lap no matter where you are sitting. He’s a bit of a picky eater but definitely likes hotdogs and ham lol He’s going to fit in great no matter where he goes. He’s a quick learner and has already started to pick up on my schedule. 4/25/26-This boy is pretty much perfect! He went to a high school track meet and did amazing! Not a single bark or peep out of him. He met lots of kids and people and was very polite and calm. I have left him out of the crate a few times. He did great, no destructive behaviors or accidents. He did have a little happy pee when my mom came to visit but other than that no accidents in the house! He is still doing great on the leash. Not reactive at all. My girl is very reactive and when she starts to lose it, Diego just looks like at her like she’s crazy lol! He loves people attention but also likes to cuddle up by himself. He isn’t afraid of the crate. He goes in there on his own throughout the day and gets fed in there, he just doesn’t like being locked in there. He remains very respectful of Josie and her things and leaves them alone. He has some areas on his back where his fur is sparse and skin appears dry so I’m trying to address that. And he will get updated on his shots next weekend & then be ready for his new home. Overall, this handsome dude is basically the perfect guy. 4/22/26-We’re a couple days in now and things are still going well with Diego! He is fully house trained. No accidents or destruction of any kind. He is very respectful of our dog Josie and doesn’t jump onto furniture without being invited. He is great on the leash. He met some kids on our walk yesterday and did really well with them. He definitely has your stereotypical boxer personality and is goofy. He loves people attention and knowing where his people are. He will always come to find me where I am and circle back to make sure I haven’t left. He listens very well. He will go lay down when you tell him too, he knows “no” and “down.” He was very good while I worked from home. He laid on his bed in the same room and stayed quiet. Really Diego’s only downside is getting use to the crate. He goes in okay, but cries once the door shuts. He is calm by the time I get back, but it still makes me feel bad. I do think he can be left out of the crate, in a few more days I will give that a try…. Just not yet 🙂 So far, Diego is pretty perfect and is going to be a great addition to any family or the best best friend to any single person! 4/20/26-Diego arrived yesterday! He was not a fan of waking up to snow this morning. Lol Diego’s first 24 hours have been really good! He is house trained and knows the basic commands- sit, down and paw. He’s REALLY good on a leash. We’ve been on a few walks and he’s a bit of a zig-zagger but doesn’t pull at all. He’s not reactive at people or things and he waits patiently until our dog Josie is done with her sniffing before he continues to walk. He grazes with eating rather than gobbling it all down and very gently takes treats. He and Josie are getting along well. He’s very respectful of her. Doesn’t try to take her bones, eat her food or her water and gives her space while laying down.He loves people attention and definitely has the boxer lean down. He likes to try and sit right on my lap. Seems we need to work on the crate- he went in it okay but was crying and trying to get out. He was in there a few hours and when I got home he was quiet and calm, just not sure how long that took. Overall, we’re off to a great start! 4/19/26-Diego is a very sweet beautiful 5 year boxer owner surrender that came into rescue today. He has been living at a family member of his owner for the past year as the owner was having personal issues. The owner finally decided he can no longer care for Diego so decided to turn to rescue to find him a new home. The family member says she would have kept Diego if she didn’t already have 2 of her own dogs & one of her own dogs is a little dog aggressive so she has been keeping them separate using gates. She says Diego is a great dog and thinks Diego is more submissive and needs a little more human attention. She says if you ignore him too long he will stalk “talking” to you & stomping his feet! Lol She also says he is healthy but no known exposure to cats or young children. Diego is neutered & we are working on getting him a vet check-up, shots updated & heartworm/lyme test done before he can go to his new home. Here is a comment too from his transport volunteer: “He was a real sweetie when we transported him!”
