About Lucky

Please note our process starts with an application. If we think you might be a good fit, we will reach out to coordinate a phone interview. This is followed by a video call with the foster home. Virtual home visit, personal and vet reference checks are required to complete the process. Transport is included in our adoption donation. Lucky, 10 months, neutered male, Pitbull/Retriever/Rottweiler mix, 49 pounds (not full grown). He is in a foster home in Toronto, Ontario. Lucky was previously adopted about 4 months ago. Our rescue saves dogs from Texas. Lucky and his sister were surrendered to a county shelter where they were very scared. He spent several months in foster care where he began to build his confidence and could just be a puppy. A wonderful family in Toronto adopted him, but reached out recently as they no longer believe they are the right fit for Lucky. He is hot and cold with their young child (6 years old) and they have a baby on the way. He has not reacted to their child, but does show he is uncomfortable at times. Children 14 years and older would be a better match or no kids in the home. There is not another dog in the home and while we thought he would do well, this has proven to be a challenge. He struggles to walk confidently outside or on leash. When he was in foster care previously he did really well walking on leash with other dogs. He must have another well balanced dog in the home to help mentor him. He will need a slow acclimation as everything will be new to him, but we believe another dog will help him gain the confidence he is lacking. Here is what his current home shared with us: Lucky is a deeply loving, goofy young dog who just needs the right environment to feel safe. Beneath his fearful exterior is a playful, affectionate companion who adores toys, cuddles, and being close to his people. With patience, structure, and a calm home, Lucky has so much potential to thrive. Lucky does best with slow introductions to new dogs and people, and he’s shown that having another confident dog around helps him feel more secure. He has successfully walked alongside large dogs up to 80 pounds and generally shows curiosity rather than reactivity toward dogs on walks. While he may initially give warnings when unfamiliar dogs enter his space, he settles once he feels comfortable. At home, Lucky is equal parts silly and sweet. He loves toys, enjoys curling up close to his humans, and has a hilarious love of food — especially apples. If he hears someone cutting fruit in the kitchen, he’ll come sprinting from another floor just in case there’s a snack involved. He’s also known for dramatically placing his face on the couch or bed until someone acknowledges him. He thrives in calm environments where people allow him space and don’t force interaction. Strange people to him make him very nervous so a home who is understanding and will be patient. Lucky is crate trained and finds comfort in his crate, but he is not yet house trained due to his fear of going outside. He currently struggles with walks in busy neighborhoods and will often pull hard to return home, though he does better in quiet parks or trails. A quieter environment with a yard and another dog companion would likely help him continue building confidence and improve his potty training success. His ideal home would be a patient individual or couple living in a calm area, preferably outside the city, with another friendly dog to help guide him. Lucky needs adopters committed to continued training and helping him feel safe at his own pace. Lucky is not a “perfect” easy dog — he’s a sensitive one. But for the right family, the reward of watching him blossom into the happy, playful dog he wants to be will be incredibly special. ***Listed BREED and AGE - We are taking our best guess & recommendations from our veterinarian on age, breed and size when fully grown.
