About Calvin

Calvin has been with us since February 2025. He is a sweet, goofy dog who benefits from structure, clear expectations, and time to burn off energy. Like many long-stay dogs, Calvin shows some leash-related behaviors and can become overwhelmed, but outside of the shelter he consistently shows how good of a boy he really is. The challenges: -Will grab and bite the leash when overstimulated, though he responds well to correction and redirection. -Pulls on leash initially, especially when excited or in new environments. -Can become overwhelmed around other dogs and may growl if pushed beyond his comfort level. -Has a prey drive and will attempt to chase small animals. -Can be shy when people reach directly for his head. The good stuff: -Did very well on a Dog's Day Out - excited, affectionate, and happy to be out and about. -After burning off some energy, he walked close to his handlers and frequently "checked in" with them. -Extremely friendly with strangers and eager to say hello to everyone he met. -Saw another dog in public and showed interest with loose body language, tail wagging, and no signs of aggression. -Has done okay with submissive, respectful dogs and prefers calm co-existence. -Rode great in the car and hopped in without hesitation. Takes treats very gently. -Shows his goofy side with enthusiastic tippy taps during butt scratches. Dog-to-dog notes: -Co-existed well in the yard with another dog. -Sniffed appropriately and showed brief interest in play. -When overwhelmed, he prefers to remove himself rather than escalate. -May do best with a respectful, easygoing dog or as an only pet with continued positive exposure. Who he needs: Calvin would do best with a patient, consistent home that understands mild leash behaviors and knows how to read dog body language. He needs continued work on leash manners and thoughtful dog introductions, but he is eager to engage with people and enjoys being part of the action. A home that can give him outlets for his energy and continue building his confidence will help him thrive.
