Pualani — Soft as Velvet, Sweet as Sunshine Hi, I’m Pualani. My name means “heavenly flower,” and while I may be a little shy at first, there’s a very soft, sweet little soul underneath just waiting to bloom. I came all the way from the island of Maui, where I was dumped at a feral cat colony cared for by a dedicated network of feeders and trappers helping community cats on the island. The kind people caring for the colony quickly realized I was friendly and deserved the chance to grow up safe indoors instead of struggling outside. Now I’m learning what that safe, cozy life feels like — and honestly, I think I brought a little island energy with me too. Sunny naps are one of my specialties. Find me a warm patch of light and I’ll happily curl up for a cozy afternoon snooze. I’m still learning that the world is safe, so in new situations I can get a little nervous. When I’m unsure, I become very still and gentle while I take everything in, which makes me easy to handle as I build confidence. And little by little, I’m getting there. Even though I’m shy, I already show affection in quiet, gentle ways. I’ll rub up against my foster, and I’m slowly getting more comfortable with pets and attention every day. I really do want love — I just need a little patience while I learn to fully trust it. I’m also a sweet little talker. I like to chat with my people throughout the day and share tiny opinions here and there — especially if feather wand toys are involved. Those are my absolute favorite. I can’t resist them. I really enjoy other cats too. I’ve been trying very hard to make friends with the resident cat in my foster home, and I would love another friendly kitty companion in my forever home to help me continue building confidence. And one more important thing: my fur feels like velvet. Truly. You have to pet me to understand. My rescue and transport to Give Me Shelter were made possible through a partnership between Rusty MauiCat, who arranged my foster and medical care on Maui, Fly Hawaii Cats and the Maui Cat Café, who coordinated my flight volunteer, and the Baxter Foundation, who helped organize everything and sponsored my flight to safety. Now I’m safe in foster care with @rsinr, learning what it means to be loved.
