About Hazel

Hi there... my name is Hazel, and I’ve been told I have the kind of eyes that can tell a whole story. So I guess I’ll start at the beginning—with mine—and maybe, just maybe, it will lead me to you. I came to Central Arizona Animal Rescue in October of 2025, but my journey didn’t start there. Before I arrived, I was out on my own, doing my best to survive... and protect the little lives depending on me. You see, I wasn’t alone—I had a litter of puppies. They were my whole world. I kept them safe, fed, and warm until kind humans stepped in to help us. Once we arrived at the rescue, we finally had a soft place to rest, full bowls, and people who cared. My puppies grew big and strong under my care, and one by one, they found their forever families. I watched each of them go, proud but hopeful that someday it would be my turn too. But my journey wasn’t quite finished yet. When it was finally time for me to get ready for my own forever home—starting with being spayed—the nice people at the rescue discovered something scary: I had heartworm. It’s a dangerous parasite that lives in a dog’s heart and lungs, and without treatment, it can be deadly. I didn’t understand what was happening, but I knew the treatments were tough. They lasted four long months, and some parts were painful. Still, I was brave... because deep down, I believed that something good was waiting for me on the other side. The humans here always say they wish more people knew how important heartworm prevention is—it could have saved me from all of that. But I’m lucky, because I got the help I needed. And now? I’m proud to say I’m clear. Healthy. Strong. Ready. After seven months, I finally completed my treatment and was able to get spayed. I’m up to date on all my vaccinations, and I even have a microchip—just in case I ever get lost, I’ll always have a way back home. Wherever that may be. Let me tell you a little about who I am. I’m a medium-sized girl, which I think is the perfect size. Big enough to go on adventures—hikes, walks, exploring new places—but small enough to curl up beside you on the couch without taking up all the space (I’ll still happily share snacks, though... just saying). My leash manners are pretty good, and I enjoy getting out and about. I absolutely love people. I’ll greet you with a gentle wag and soft eyes that say, “Hi... I’ve been waiting for you.” I get along well with other dogs too, so if you already have a furry friend, I’d be happy to meet them. As for my breed... well, that’s a bit of a mystery! I like to think I’m a beautiful mix of lots of great things. One thing I’m still learning is what it’s like to live inside a home. Since I was found as a stray, some things might be new to me. But I’m smart, eager to please, and ready to learn—with a little patience and a lot of love. Mostly, I’m just looking for someone to give my heart to. Someone who will see me—not just where I’ve been, but where I’m going. If you think that could be you, I would love to meet you. Please email my friends at mike@caaronline.org to set up an appointment. I’ve been through a lot... but I’m still full of hope. Maybe my forever story starts with you. PLEASE e-mail (do not call) mike@caaronline.org for more information and to set up an appointment to adopt.
