Gustavo came to us absolutely terrified of the shelter. Not just a little shy... terrified. For days, he stayed frozen in the back of his kennel, too fearful to be leashed or even go for walks. He had been left behind alongside two other dogs and a puppy after his family lost their housing, and it was clear his whole world had been turned upside down. But little by little, Gustavo has started to realize he's safe here. He's a slow burn kind of guy who needs patience when meeting new people, but once he trusts you, his sweet and goofy personality starts to shine through. He loves leaning in for full body rubs, playing "find it" for treats in the yard, and chasing tennis balls. He previously lived with other dogs and has done well with brief dog interactions at the shelter, offering polite sniffs and relaxed body language before happily continuing on his walk. The more consistency and routine Gustavo has in his life, the more relaxed and confident he becomes. Underneath all that fear is a truly sweet boy who just wants to feel safe and loved.
