Firn is one of the most incredible, special cats we have ever rescued and his story is one for the ages. At just one year old, it's hard to believe that a cat who has survived as much as Firn has could still be so sweet, silly, and loving. On a cold night in December, Firn was found in Prospect Lefferts Gardens Brooklyn, incessantly crying under a trash shed. When we showed up to rescue him he eagerly walked right into the carrier we brought. Firn was emaciated and he walked painfully, with a strange gait. When we rushed him to the ER we couldn't believe what x-rays revealed. Firn had a severely displaced fracture in his pelvis, one that would not heal on his own unless he received an emergency surgery. He also had unexplained swelling in his joints and spine. Incredibly, Firn's story touched the hearts of thousands online who rallied to make sure we could afford the specialized hospital care and stay he needed. The fracture in Firn's hip was surgically repaired (he now has a titanium plate) and he was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called Immune-mediated Polyarthritis (IMPA) which was causing his joint swelling, the simple treatment of which is an affordable steroid course. Firn spent the last few months recovering from surgery, building his strength, and being showered with love. He is now a happy, healthy cat ready for his forever family. Firn's fosters say he is one of the goofiest cats they have ever met. They joke that he is built like a baby foal - with long legs and a long, lean body. And he races around like one too, darting after his feather toys and springs and then racing back to rub on the legs of his people. Firn is quite affectionate and loves to be in whatever rooms you are in. He is always underfoot, making figure eights between your legs and walking alongside you throughout the house. He is obsessed with churu and will come racing over the moment he sees a tube of the stuff in your hands. He is not a lap cat just yet but loves to be next to you or leaning against you. Firn gets along well with friendly cats, but unfortunately suffered an incident where an older male cat attacked him. This has made him cautious when meeting others. We think he would thrive in a home with a young playful kitten or with gentle cats who are known to get along well with others. He is very confident and we think he would do just fine with gentle dogs. Firn would also do well with children but does nip when he gets overstimulated - cues that a young child would need to learn to read. Firn is 1 years old, neutered, and has no other diagnosed medical concerns. IMPA is considered a chronic condition but Firn is almost finished weaning off steroids with no return of symptoms. His vet team believes he can achieve total remission and, if symptoms ever did return in his life, a low dose of affordable steroids (~$30 for a month+ course) is all that is needed to alleviate his symptoms. Neither his quality of life and life expectancy is not impacted by this condition. He is negative for FIV / FeLV, microchipped, will be fully vaccinated, and has been treated for parasites/fleas.
