About Betsy

I’d like to introduce everyone to our new foster Betsy (aka Maggie). Her stats: Female Approx. 20 lbs Terrier mix is best guess for breed—she has a wiry coat, curly tail and a flatish adorable face Age: about 10 months old We’ve had her since 4/29 in the afternoon, and today, Monday 5/4, after allowing her to get used to new spaces, people and routines, we introduced her to our 5 dogs (one at a time, of course!) It went really well! One of our dogs, a foster failure we trapped with Katrina’s help last September, and Betsy had the best time running around the yard! With the bigger dogs she was respectful when they were more wary, and already show she can read dog cues like a pro. She also has been having some supervised recliner time with me and one of our cats. Some things I’ve already learned about her: 1. She sleeps through the night on my bed with me but will get up if I need to use the restroom; but then goes right back to sleep 2. She warms up to new people pretty quickly. Even with all she’s been through, she is sweet and friendly and really just wants to be with her people 3. The sound of a hand vac doesn’t startle her, but she barked at the wind on Sunday — she still can be startled by things (so adults, or older respectful children may be best) but it’s getting better every day as she gains confidence and a stable routine 4. We are working on potty training, but with regular meals and routines it’s going well. In 6 days she’s only had 3 accidents, and readily potties outside at our regularly scheduled times 5. We started crate training her early, and she has done great with it! We’ve done this with a combination of increasing alone time in her crate (a little whining but mainly quiet), with increasing time of me sitting in the room with her (completely quiet!), then going potty outside immediately after coming out of the crate. Since she is still a puppy her new family will probably want to keep working with her on this. She’ll even go in the crate on her own to get her toys when we come back in, which I take as a good sign 6. Working on leash skills. Her go to spot is behind you, so I’ve had some success getting her to walk on my left side If you think Betsy would be the perfect fit for your family, please fill out the pre-adoption application at: https://www.yavapaihumanetrappers.org/preadoption-application
