AvailableAbout Matilda
Matilda has clearly been through some things. You can see it in the little scars on her face, in how thin she is, and in the fact that she somehow ended up at a shelter at eight years old -- a gentle, middle-aged dog suddenly trying to make herself invisible in a loud, stressful place. And yet -- somehow -- she is still soft. Soft golden fur, yes. But also soft in the way she moves through the world. Soft in the way she looks at people, like she's already decided they're probably good. Soft in the way her tail gives these slow, thoughtful wags whenever a person walks by, or another dog says hello. We don't know what her life looked like before she came to us. We can make some educated guesses, and none of them are especially cheerful. She's underweight and heartworm positive (Animal Aid Society will cover her treatment, even after adoption). Matilda has the kind of weary politeness that makes you suspect life has asked far too much of her for far too long. But the remarkable thing about Matilda is this: she has not let hardship turn her hard. While the other dogs occasionally engage in fence-line arguments that sound like a meeting moderated entirely by caffeine, Matilda simply opts out. She wanders away. She refuses to participate in barking matches. She would like everyone to relax, please. Give her a soft blanket and she looks genuinely touched by it. Give her a meal and she stares at you with this quiet gratitude that can knock the wind out of you. Sit beside her quietly and she leans into you with complete trust, like she's been waiting a very long time for life to become gentle again. Honestly, after everything she's been through, the fact that she still greets the world with kindness feels a little miraculous. Matilda is available for adoption through Animal Aid Society, located at 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are 9am-noon daily, including weekends and holidays. Interested? Come for a visit any day of the week - 365 days a year between 9am - 12pm. Hope to see you soon! PLEASE NOTE: Animal Aid Society observes a 40 mile adoption radius to facilitate post adoption support and follow ups.
