Hi, I'm Yeti's foster mom. We practice ASL, he came to us with the understanding that he was deaf, so we started right in on basic signs. Yeti is learning a modified version of ASL that is done with 1 hand so the other can be kept free for treats or a leash. He was also malnourished and severely under weight when he went into shelter care. Currently his weight is healthy, he is very kennel trained and happy to relax in it so that is one sign we teach. Of course “sit” is a big one and he's very good at that. He is working hard on patience with food as he still hasn't learned there will be another meal. On the other hand this makes him very food driven so training with treats has proven easy. He has learned the sign for “potty” and will pretty much go on command. He keeps his kennel clean over most nights and during the day as long as he gets frequent breaks. Mostly he is a normal puppy who loves people and cuddles and play time. Having said all that, Yeti is NOT deaf. We haven't quite figured out the exact issue yet. It will be something his new family will work with as he grows. We are not sure if he was born this way or has trauma that he might be able to overcome with time. Our best guess is he hears higher pitches versus the lower. He has a hard time figuring out where the sound comes from. Maybe a processing issue. Although, as he learns his people around him those sounds get more attached to the individuals. Everyone who meets Yeti loves him! However, his new family will be someone who is patient and willing to learn some basic ASL as he learns best with signs. He gets along well with dogs and has met cats. A current resident dog should be stable with patience and calmness but not afraid to set boundaries. This is because Yeti may not hear the “warning growls” from other dogs. The human will also need to have an understanding of this and intervene when necessary. After over 30 foster dogs, I can say, Yeti is one of our favorite! His antics are humorous and his love is great. All animals come from high kill shelters with poor access to resources. Once they arrive to our rescue they are quarantined for health purposes and spoiled in loving foster homes until their forever home is found!
