BIG RED Born early 2020 | Intake: February 5, 2026 Big Red’s story started out rough—but if we have anything to say about it, his ending is going to be nothing short of amazing. Found near the zoo about four months before coming into our care, this big guy had clearly been surviving the hard way for quite some time. Years of life on the streets left their mark: thick, calloused paw pads, facial scabs and scars from past scuffles, and a coat that told the story of a cat who had to fend for himself. He came to us with fleas, severe dental disease that required extensive surgery, and chronic bilateral ear infections that left his ears permanently folded in that signature “cauliflower” look. And then… there’s the jowls. Oh, the jowls. Big Red spent a long time as an intact male, which gifted him those glorious cheeks and a classic “stud tail.” Combined with his now 14-pound frame, he is every bit the rugged, streetwise cat—on the outside. But inside? Total marshmallow. Despite everything he’s been through, Big Red is one of the most gentle, docile, and content cats we’ve ever met. He gets along beautifully with everyone and seems to genuinely enjoy the company of both people and other cats. In fact, his favorite place to be is in someone’s arms—cradled like a baby, soaking up all the love he missed out on for so long. During his time in a foster home, Big Red quickly made himself part of the family—especially bonding with two other former tom cats, where his favorite activity was piling into cozy cuddle circles for group nap sessions (often head-to-head… or head-to-keester—we don’t judge!). Big Red is FIV+, but with no canine teeth, transmission risk is essentially nonexistent—even if he were the type to bite (which he absolutely is not). This sweet, squishy-faced teddy bear is ready for a home where he can finally relax, be adored, and live the soft life he deserves. A family with kids would be a perfect match for his easygoing, affectionate nature. Rough start—smashing finish. That’s the future we want for Big Red.
