She can be timid and wary at first, often moving quickly or keeping her distance when unsure. While she isn't currently interested in toys or treats, she shows potential to build confidence with time, patience, and a calm environment. She tends to keep to herself and would do best in a quiet home with a gentle approach to help her feel safe and secure. With the right support, she has the potential to come out of her shell and form strong bonds. Per volunteer 4/25 : I took Rena out today. She was easy to leash, has very calm energy, super easy to walk. She is shy. Was not really interested in me or toys. Sniffed around in the yard. She returned to her kennel easy as well. per Staff 4/20: Rena was laying down in front of her door when I approached. Her guillotine door was closed at this time. I opened the door slowly to leash up, her eyes were wide and darting. I was easily able to leash up and she slowly came out of the kennel. Tail down, eyes darting, hyper vigilant and ears to the side. Stopped a few times as we were walking through. Outside her tail was still tightly down, eyes darting and ears to the side. However she began to sniff while we walked around. I crouched down and she came over to me sniffing me. I was able to gently pet her on her chest and side, she stood next to me. She was heavy panting and occasionally trembling. When another person came over to use she pulled in another direction and then went up to them sniffing them. Brought into my office with a crate set up. Placed a calming collar on her and she went right into the crate. Per staff on 4/16: "Kennel Presentation: at the front of the kennel and then moved to the middle when I approached to the kennel. Wide eyes darting, ears to the side and tail down not moving. Leash Skills: Moved further away when I opened the door and presented my leash. Had to lasso. Once leash on she came out slowly. pulls hard at the end of the leash. Tail down, eyes darting and ears back. Outside she pulled towards the street, exit searching. Sociability: Came over and sniffed me a few times. I was able to gently pet her chest and side. Rena was panting, wide eyes and ears to the side with tail down. In the pen she did some sniffing and then sat in the corner. Play: n/a Dog Interaction: Met labello. Sniffed each other but did not interact much other then that. Return to Kennel: Pulled hard in the kennels, hesitated slightly to go back into her kennel. I was able to slowly take the leash off with my hand." Per staff on 4/16: "Helped bring Rena to surgery, she was in the back of her kennel and the barrier was already down. I was able to lasso her in a few tires when she came closer to the front as another staff member was calling her. Her eyes were wide, ears back, closed mouth. Once leashed she pulled moderately on leash with a tucked tail, ears back, wide eyes. We got to surgery and she started trembling with the same body language as walking there. She allowed the doctor to listen to her and give her a shot with wide eyes, trembling, ears pinned back, tightly tucked tail, tightly closed mouth and lip licks." Per staff on 4/16 about dog playgroup: "Sniffed, tolerant, unfazed" Per staff on 4/14: "Helped get Rena off the APO can. I first tossed some treats in, she sniffed but did not eat any of them. Wide eyes, panting and was trying to push her self further into the corner. I was able to lasso her and she slowly came out of the truck. Once out she began to panic on the leash with tail tucked at the end of it and circling. I kept her moving as quickly as I could to secure her into the building. Was able to fully check her in with only light restraint of a bear hug. Walking to the kennel she was tail tucked, eyes darting, ears back and panting. Tried to push back out of the kennel when removing the leash."
