Amy
AvailableAmy is a standard poodle with an apricot and beige curly coat, currently living in Lincolnwood, IL. At 2 and a half years old, she is an adult female who has been spayed and is fully up to date on her vaccines. She’s medium-sized and still working on house training, so experience with patient routines will help her succeed. Amy does not have special needs beyond her gentle temperament and previous challenging background.
About Amy
Amy arrived at the rescue as a former puppymill mom with several other standard poodles in April 2023. When she first came in, she was reserved and unsure, often sticking close to her fellow poodles. Over the following months, Amy has shown impressive progress adapting to the comforts of a home, though she remains a shy dog who will take time to settle into a new environment. She’s still working on her potty training, and she’ll need someone present who can provide frequent bathroom breaks, ideally every couple of hours. Amy needs a patient, consistent adopter who is willing to let her decompress at her own speed. A gentle resident dog or owner who is home often would be a big help to her adjustment. A securely fenced and gated yard is a must for Amy—her shyness means she may try to escape if startled, and she feels safest having her own outdoor potty space. With time and gentle handling, Amy’s classic poodle personality shines through: she loves a good head scratch and will quietly keep you company for hours. She is 2 and a half years old, spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, and heartworm negative. Subsequent vaccinations will be the responsibility of her adopter. While Amy is still learning how to trust, she’s destined to become a loyal, affectionate companion for a supportive adopter. She’s looking for someone committed for the long haul, as poodles can live up to 20 years. Amy is available for adoption in the Chicago metro area, and home visits are required. Questions about Amy
What type of living environment is this breed usually best suited for?
Standard Poodles like Amy thrive in homes that offer both mental and physical stimulation and where they’re treated as part of the family. They do well in houses with enough space, but can adapt to apartment life if their exercise and social needs are met.
How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?
Amy, as a standard poodle, will benefit from a fenced yard where she can play and relieve herself securely. Daily walks and regular time outdoors are also important for her well-being.
Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?
Standard Poodles are known to be gentle and tolerant, making them a good fit for families with children, as long as both the dog and kids are taught to interact respectfully. Because Amy is shy, any children in her new home should understand the need to be calm and patient with her.
