Shadow ACCT-A-246036 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to medical concerns. Shadow must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or EXPERIENCED ADOPTER by MONDAY, AUGUST 27TH at 10AM. Should Shadow's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Shadow is a 15-year-old cat who was surrendered on April 24th when his family no longer had the time to care for him. His owner described him as very sweet, chill, and loving. Shadow is front declawed and litter trained, but recently has had issues using the litter box consistently. At the shelter, he is noted to be very friendly and tolerant of all handling, with a ravenous appetite for cornbread and crunchy cat treats. Shadow has significant muscle wasting and has hyperthyroidism, which is a manageable condition with ongoing treatment. He will need a dedicated adopter or rescue committed to long-term care, including medication, follow-up bloodwork, and veterinary monitoring. Due to his medical concerns, Shadow is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or experienced adopter. VIDEOS: Meet Shadow: https://youtube.com/shorts/eOExAAJjapY?feature=share BEHAVIOR NOTES: Per staff 4/25: Shadow was laying on the shelf when I approached and remained there, but stood up and was tolerant of pets on his head and neck. He was too high up for me to pet him elsewhere. Seems like a sweet boy, he's just so bony right now. Another staff member told me that while he didn't show any interest in wet cat food yesterday, he stole another staff member's cornbread and ate it ravenously and was shoveling it into his mouth. They also learned that he likes crunchy cat treats. When he was getting his blood drawn, they put some treats near his face and he happily chomped away while they were collecting the blood. Per staff 4/25: Very friendly, tolerates all handling. Extremely food motivated, ravenous appetite. Per owner surrender notes submitted 3/27: Shadow is 15 years old and had been with his owner since he was a kitten. Owner is surrendering due to no longer having time to provide care for him. He is front declawed and is fully litter trained, but has had issues urinating outside the box. He is low to medium energy but enjoys balls and other chase toys. He likes to play with people and nap. He eats dry food twice a day. He sleeps on furniture. He is friendly towards strangers, children, and other cats (he lived with others in the home). His ideal home would be an older couple, or someone who just wants come company. Their favorite thing about him is that he is very chill. Per owner 3/26: Pooping all over the house after years of doing great. Wont listen anymore, and does whatever, but is really sweet. Fighting with girlfriend cat (Jaxx) and won't listen anymore either. Both cats been in the family for 10+ years, but was kept in the basement for 2 years, I foster them after I got my own place, but completely changed. Very sweet, and loves to be held, but does whatever he wants, and extremely greedy, and will do whatever to eat... human or cat food. MEDICAL NOTES: 4/25 Vet Exam: Shadow was alert and responsive with a body condition score of 4/9 and a muscle condition score of 1/3. He was moderately dehydrated. Bloodwork from 4/24 showed mildly low lymphocytes and eosinophils, mildly elevated BUN and ALT, and an elevated T4 of 10.4, consistent with hyperthyroidism. Shadow was given subcutaneous fluids (60ml) and started on Mirtazapine 2.5mg twice daily indefinitely. A T4 recheck is recommended in 4 weeks. 4/24 CVT Exam: 5.3 pounds. Presented to back office as red slip, inappropriate elimination, voracious eating, 15 years old. On exam, P is emaciated and dehydrated with a very prolonged skin turgor, dry mucus membranes, and sunken eyes. Eyes are clean, minimal wax in ears. Nose clear. Gums dry, teeth have some staining but overall good. Hair coat clean, no fleas or hair loss noted. Front declawed. Male altered, no spines on penis. Bloodwork showed mildly elevated BUN, ALT, and T4 of 10.4 Plan to start Methimazole 5mg BID, SQF 60ml, and schedule a vet check in AM. Per owner surrender notes submitted 3/27: He has not been grooming himself well. He has recently lost a significant amount of weight, is drinking more water than usual, and occasionally has diarrhea. - Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
